The Swedish government amended the Parental Leave Act to expand the definition of parents entitled to take a parental leave. Starting 1 July 2019, the parental leave right will extend to a parent’s cohabitant who is permanently living with the parent. Parental leave was previously allowed only when the parent’s cohabitant was married or had children with the parent. Parental leave may be requested under various circumstances from birth through later child care. Noncompliance with the Parental Leave Act, as amended, may result in damages covering economic loss or compensation for emotional distress.
