Improving your vehicle’s security

In a world where time is short, keeping track of life’s essentials still feels like a full-time job.

Losing a phone or wallet can be incredibly frustrating, but can be rectified by freezing credit cards, ordering a new passport, or locking the phone remotely.

However, if you misplace your car’s fob and the question becomes: “where’s my car?” It’s a different league of panic.

An evolving risk landscape

For over 20 years, the accepted way to keep your car secure – beyond alarms and immobilisers – has been a tracking system. Originally designed to protect security vans, early trackers were basic devices that helped locate and recover stolen vehicles.

While today’s trackers are smarter, faster, and more accurate than ever, thieves have also developed their tactics too.

Modern systems now include driver recognition and allow police to track a stolen vehicle with pinpoint accuracy. Insurers often require these systems for high-value or high-risk vehicles, and for good reason – they work.

A checklist for managing vehicle security

  • Keep your ADR fob and car key separate – not on the same keyring.

  • Avoid storing them together in containers or Faraday pouches.

  • Replace and check fob batteries regularly.

  • Make sure your tracker is activated, and the subscription is renewed.

  • Never leave your fob in the car when you’re not in it.

  • Download your app to stay connected and use the extra features, such as valet/service PIN modes.

  • Ask your dealer about system status and compatibility.

Introducing the ADR Immobiliser

Enter the ADR (Automatic Driver Recognition) Immobiliser – your car’s invisible bodyguard. Paired with a tracker, it doesn’t just help find your car after it’s gone – it helps prevent it from going in the first place.

But here’s the kicker: both systems rely on you.

If you don’t activate them, renew the subscription, or worse – leave the fob in the car – your insurer might just leave you holding the (empty) key fob.

Your dealer can help you get set up, check subscription status, and make sure everything’s ticking over. But ultimately, it’s on you to keep your security gear in check.

Next steps

Your car is likely more than just a form of transport – it’s a passion, a reflection of you, and maybe even a dream realised. Whether it’s a one-of-one, a paint-to-sample unicorn, or a rare out-of-production gem, don’t let simple oversight turn your vehicle into a cautionary tale.
