Space and satellite insurance FAQs
What is space insurance?
Space insurance provides financial protection against specified risks in manufacturing, handling, launching and operating space systems or hardware. An insurance policy is arranged by an insurance broker, such as Lockton Space, acting as an intermediary between the client (satellite owner, operator, manufacturer or launch provider) and the underwriters (who underwrite the risk and make payments in the event of a successful claim). The majority of space insurance policies are written for commercial communications satellites and imaging satellites, but you can get coverage for most satellites and spacecraft types, for both launch and in-orbit life.
What does satellite insurance cover?
Traditionally, a satellite is insured according to a sequence of events in its lifetime, which can be divided into four main phases: manufacturing, pre-launch, launch and in-orbit operation. In practice, coverage for in-orbit test, commissioning and early operational lifetime is included in the launch policy, which typically covers launch plus one year of life. Policies are then negotiated on an annual basis for the remaining in-orbit lifetime.
How do I get insurance for a satellite launch?
The first step in insuring a launch is to contact a space insurance broker, like Lockton Space. A good broker will discuss your specific needs, advise on policy details and provide informed and friendly guidance throughout. As an intermediary between the client and the underwriters, the broker will negotiate a competitive rate for the coverage, supporting you with any subsequent issues from policy renewals to claims.
How do I get lifetime insurance for a satellite?
Most space insurance brokers can support you in obtaining lifetime insurance for a satellite. The key is to find the right broker for you.
Why do I need a space insurance broker?
You need space insurance, but how do you know you’re getting the best deal for your requirements? An experienced broker will identify your risk, provide expert advice on managing it, and match you with an insurer that protects every aspect of your ventures. Acting as an intermediary between you and the underwriters (who work for the insurer and make payments in the event of a successful claim), your broker negotiates the best possible coverage for your needs, supporting you with subsequent issues from renewals to claims.
How do I choose a space insurance broker?
If you’re looking for space insurance, you need a broker you can trust. Partner with Lockton and you have not just a broker but an advocate – on your side and at your side, every step of the way. Family-run and privately-owned, we build lasting relationships with our clients. Our approach is personal and personable. Our retention rate speaks for itself. Ultimately, you need a broker that goes the extra mile to keep you protected – today and tomorrow.
How can insurance help NewSpace companies?
Entrepreneurial companies developing new space systems and solutions are understandably technology-focused and have little time to consider insurance. However, a carefully tailored insurance policy can be a crucial part of a NewSpace company’s risk mitigation strategy. Not only does it provide reassurance for investors, it helps your company survive the possibility of a catastrophic launch or in-orbit failure.
What will space insurance cover in future?
To date, the majority of space insurance policies have been written for commercial communications satellites and imaging satellites. But coverage can be obtained for most satellites and spacecraft types – for both launch and in-orbit life. The industry is currently looking at coverage for anything from in-orbit servicing vehicles to commercial space station modules. As the purpose of the space insurance industry is to support and provide risk mitigation for the development of space-based capabilities, it will develop alongside the technology – be it solar power satellites, lunar mining or space tourism.
When was the first space insurance policy written?
The first space insurance policy was written in 1965 for Intelsat I, the first commercial geostationary communications satellite – otherwise known as Early Bird. But it only covered pre-launch and third-party liability (for US$5 million and US$25 million, respectively), because the risks of launch and in-orbit life were not well understood by insurers. By the 1970s, it was possible to insure satellites across four main life-phases: manufacturing, pre-launch, launch and in-orbit operation.
Can astronauts get insurance?
Astronauts and other space travellers are not usually insured, but there’s potential for a future life insurance policy for space risks. The first astronaut life insurance policy was written in 1969 for the Apollo 11 crew – Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins – by the Greek Insurance Company Inc. According to the policy document, it covered “loss of life or disappearance in space and permanent total disability of the insured astronauts.” The coverage amount was US$10,000 per astronaut and was intended to match the average life policy then current in the US. However, it’s not clear whether the policy was arranged with the consent of the astronauts or devised as a marketing stunt.
