If you’re running, or setting up, a recruitment business, the answer is simple: you do! Some types of insurance, like Employers Liability, are compulsory. Others, like Professional Liability, are strongly advisable as they can protect against risks that could badly hurt your business - and will often be required by businesses you work with.

Professional Indemnity Insurance provides mission-critical protection against some of the key risks recruitment consultants are exposed to by the nature of their operations. Client organisations will often only work with recruitment consultancies that hold Professional Indemnity Insurance. It can also protect against the cost of defending alleged contraventions of your legal, regulatory or contractual obligations.

If you’re planning to start up a recruitment business, you’ll need to think carefully about protecting your business, your employees, and the clients you’ll be working with. Unless you are a one-person business, you have a legal obligation to hold Employers Liability. Many businesses won’t want to work with you unless you have Professional Indemnity Insurance. But you should also consider a range of other covers including Public Liability, Cyber and Technology, Directors and Officers, Group Personal Accident, Driver Negligence, Dishonesty of Temporary Workers, Business Interruption, and Key Person insurance. If you expect to have candidates or employer representatives visiting your recruitment business, you will almost certainly want to have Public Liability Insurance in place. Public Liability cover protects you against claims made by third parties for injury or property damage. It can cover both legal expenses and compensation payments.

Vicarious cover protects against liability arising from the actions of other people, whereas non-vicarious arises from something you have done directly. As a recruitment consultancy, it’s important to have both types of cover in place as you may be held responsible either for your own actions or for the actions of employees you have sourced or supplied.

Aside from crucial protections like Employers Liability, Professional Indemnity Insurance and Public Liability Insurance, recruitment consultancies may want to consider a range of other covers. These would typically include: Cyber and Technology Insurance, Directors and Officers Insurance, Employee Practices Liability Insurance, Legal Expenses Insurance, Crime Insurance, Business Interruption Insurance, Commercial Property Insurance, Professional Liability Insurance and Key Person Insurance.

Also known as Home Care Insurance, Domiciliary Care Insurance protects businesses involved in providing care and support services to people in their own homes. If your recruitment agency ventures into placing candidates in domiciliary care roles - or includes the provision of domiciliary care services within its operations - a Domiciliary Care Insurance package can protect you against a wide range of claims, help you comply with your legal obligations, and provide important reassurance to clients and other stakeholders.

Also known as Contractor Umbrella Insurance, Umbrella Company Insurance provides a package of cover against risks associated with operating an umbrella company or employment intermediary. If your company acts as an employer for contractors and/or freelancers, handling their payroll, tax deductions and other admin tasks, you may want to consider taking out one of these policies.

If you place temporary drivers, many of your clients will insist you have Drivers’ Negligence Insurance. The cover will enable your clients to make claims for damage caused to their vehicle by your temporary worker. This isn’t a substitute for motor insurance, it is simply a way for your clients to cover small damages that fall below their motor fleet excess or cover their excess in the event of a large amount of damage.
