Scenario
Cybersecurity challenge: incident cost estimation
Your task is to estimate the total cost to a firm following a significant cybersecurity incident.
Incident overview:
A cyber-attack impacted a SaaS provider that serves clients across multiple industries but does not hold “sensitive” data.
The sequence of events is as follows:
A vulnerability in an externally facing port was exploited by a third-party actor, who gained unauthorised access to internal systems.
The attacker exfiltrated the following data:
Client customer data: Names and email addresses
Internal company data: Personal files of SaaS provider staff
Financial data: Proprietary financial information of the firm
Before detection and removal, the attacker encrypted and effectively bricked the data, rendering it unusable.
A ransom demand was made in exchange for:
Non-disclosure of the stolen data
Decryption keys to restore access to bricked files
Your challenge:
Estimate the total cost of this breach to the SaaS provider.
As guidance, consider the following potential cost categories:
Contractual and legal liabilities
Refunds or penalties for breach of contract
Damages claimed by clients and their customers
Operational and incident response costs
Overtime for internal security and IT teams
Engagement of external legal counsel
PR and media support to manage public messaging
Fees for specialist forensic analysis and security audits
Incident remediation costsCosts to restore or recover data, or payment of the ransom demand
Regulatory and compliance expenses
Fines imposed by regulatory bodies
Provision of credit monitoring and identity protection services to affected individuals
Reputational and business impact
Revenue loss due to client churn
Costs associated with onboarding new clients to recoup lost revenue
How much do you think this incident could cost the firm?
