Niall Martin Life at Lockton Header

February 14, 2024

Making an impact: Niall Martin
Niall Martin, Head of People Solutions, New Zealand, has experienced first-hand the impact of Cystic Fibrosis. When he and his family saw the care, passion, and commitment of Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand, he knew that he needed to support this impactful organization. Niall has been fundraising for the charity for close to a decade. Through recent participation in the Auckland marathon and related events, he and the New Zealand team have raised thousands to support families impacted by Cystic Fibrosis, contribute to research on the disease, and advocate on behalf of the community. In recognition of his commitment to improving the lives of those around him, he was awarded the Lockton Community Impact Award in 2023. The Community Impact Award, funded by the Lockton family, honors an Associate in each region around the globe who has gone above and beyond to make their community a better place through volunteering, philanthropy, or a combination of both. “To me, this award demonstrates Lockton’s commitment across the globe to make real and meaningful differences on the ground where we live and work – in our communities,” Niall said. NZD40,000 was donated to Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand on behalf of Niall for being named the recipient of the Community Impact Award. “This award will make a huge difference and enable the charity to implement some initiatives that otherwise would not have happened this year,” he said. Community is a key pillar at Lockton, showcased through the support of our local communities and the causes that our Associates are passionate about. Every Lockton Associate can do something meaningful and special, with the full support of not just colleagues but of the entire Lockton organization. While Niall was the recipient of the award, he notes that this could not have been possible without the support of his fellow Associates in the New Zealand office. “The award was made in my name, but there’s no ‘I’ in ‘team,’ he said. “Really it represents a huge thank you and recognition for all our Lockton New Zealand team who jump onboard and give their all with our fundraising efforts for Cystic Fibrosis each and every year. Our culture means that if one of us is passionate about something, or simply needs some help, then we know our team members will be there for us – no question.”

Leah Coakley Life at Lockton

March 7, 2024

Making an impact: Leah Coakley
Leah Coakley wants to be a part of the solution. After having her first child, she found a new appreciation for the vast amount of love and resources children require – and a growing awareness of disparities among children in New York City. As she says, “It broke my heart. I knew I had to do something.” She discovered CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), an organization that advocates for youth in foster care, and got to work. She joined CASA-NYC’s junior board and put intention into action. Leah fundraised and brought in meaningful donations. “I found that I was just as good at selling CASA’s mission to those who wanted to have an impact as I was at selling M&A insurance to buyers of companies.” Leah has a growth mindset – both in the insurance world and in her communities. Her proclivity to bring people together to support meaningful causes is evidenced by her work within the community and at Lockton. Now on CASA-NYC’s executive board, she helped establish a Board Engagement Committee, which supports equity and anti-racism work. This aligns with her goals as Director & Culture Officer of Lockton’s Transaction Liability group where she facilitates community and DEI initiatives such as cooking meals for sick NYC residents and supporting Lockton’s LEAN (Lockton Empowered Associate Network) groups as a member of the Northeast DEI Council. She is also an advocate for women’s initiatives. In 2022, she along with other leaders in the transactional risk (“TR”) space founded Women of Transactional Risk, which was established with a mission of fostering an inclusive community of men and women to generate meaningful connections and empower women in the TR industry. Leah’s experiences have taught her the value of a caring culture. As Leah says, “The people you work with is everything, and we all thrive in our day job and beyond when collaborating in purpose-driven work within a supportive and uplifting team environment.”

Life at Lockton Ted Brown

March 6, 2024

Making an impact: Ted Brown
Ted Brown, President and Partner, believes that being an active part of the community is an incredible honor and responsibility. “Being active comes in many forms,” he explained. “And I challenge and encourage others to think about when you see a need, to choose progress over perfection. Action, even if small, can be meaningful.” Ted has been making progress for nearly 10 years to better the lives of active duty and military veterans in Colorado. After interviewing over 100 active duty and military veterans, shadowing other foundations and surveying the Colorado veteran population, Ted identified four common themes: veterans didn’t understand the value of their experience and how it could translate to the private sector; they had no formal support for making that transition; there were no mentors available to them during their transition out of service; and veterans that were working were mostly underemployed. Determined to find a way to better serve this population, Ted founded Valor Bridge. The 10-week program, led by executives and leadership development professionals, teaches participants business skills, helps optimize their natural strengths and translates their experience in the military to the private sector. They’re also paired with mentors for ongoing support in their transition. Due to changes brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Valor Bridge combined with Salute Colorado to create an even bigger impact on the veteran community. The organization now offers three programs for recently separated military veterans to help them become leaders in business and community. Because of his ongoing work with the veteran community, along with his incredible business results and leadership inside and outside of Lockton, Ted was named Producer of the Year in 2023. He was awarded the Producer Community Impact Award as a result. “I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude,” said Ted on winning the award. “I’ve poured my heart and soul into this for almost 10 years now, and to see it recognized in front of my peers was very meaningful.” Salute Colorado received a $25,000 donation on behalf of Ted from Lockton, money that will make an immediate impact within the organization. “Lockton stands behind us,” said Ted. “They put their money where their mouth is and support us in the community. It’s an incredible environment. It’s so important to have Lockton support us in our work.” In addition to his work with Salute Colorado, Ted is a board member for Life Skills for Soldiers, which teaches active military members financial acumen and skill building. He is also the producer sponsor of the Veterans Lockton Empowered Associate Network in the Denver office. “At the end of the day, people want to be fulfilled and feel valued in their work,” said Ted. “The Lockton family and organization has done a fantastic job of providing opportunities for career fulfillment through the support of my personal and professional ambitions.”
